Many JHH readers will have heard Athul Gawende’s Radio 4 Reith Lectures about the future of medicine (bbc1.azurewebsites.net/programmes/b04sv1s5). He argues that in a medical world where thousands of evidence-based treatments and licensed drugs are wielded by dozens of recognised specialties, solo doctors, be they ever so brilliant, are but single components in increasingly complex systems.
