BHMA Membership Benefits
Why become a member? BHMA membership is open to everyone who supports a holistic approach to healthcare. Our aim is to promote holistic practice and to revitalise mainstream medicine. As part of an association of like-minded people we believe that members of the BHMA can both support one another and at the same time inform and influence the delivery of healthcare.
To achieve change in the healthcare system we need the support of those who work within it, those who work alongside it, and those who experience it. The BHMA, therefore, seeks to have a wide and inclusive constituency and aims to have relevance for all healthcare professionals, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practitioners and those who are the main beneficiaries of a holistic healthcare system-patients themselves. The BHMA provides a forum for these constituents to share information and discuss issues; it is committed to providing opportunities for people to learn more about holistic practice; and it provides a collective voice for all those seeking to change the way in which healthcare is delivered.

Physician heal thyself: the resilient, energised and positive practitioner is more likely to provide a firm foundation for a vibrant and effective healthcare system
than is the practitioner who has neglected their own wellbeing.
For people with unexplained or complex or long-term conditions or with life-limiting illness, taking time to see beyond the symptoms or the disease to the whole person, and being
better informed about potentially helpful complementary strategies, may result in patients who cope better, are less dependent o-n doctors, and who begin to take o-n more responsibility for their own condition.
For healthcare professionals, the BHMA provides a practitioner perspective on whole person care through member networks, its quarterly journal and regular education workshops. It provides a voice for the doctors and nurses practising in the mainstream who have first hand experience of the benefits of a holistic approach, both in respect of themselves and their patients. The BHMA encourages and supports healthcare students to become members and to get involved early in their careers.
CAM practitioners can establish effective links with healthcare professionals, creating mutual respect and understanding. They can grow the evidence base for the effectiveness of CAM therapies and share information about good practice.
For CAM practitioners, belonging to the BHMA is an opportunity to share ideas and information about their practice and to engage with healthcare professionals in order to create a voice for a more holistic healthcare system in which complementary strategies are better understood and available to all.
We can all take individual responsibility for health and wellbeing, by being well informed and seeking to be an active partner in our own healthcare.
For patients or lay people, being part of the BHMA is an opportunity to add their voice, through their knowledge and experience, to the call for a more holistic healthcare system.

The Gift Aid scheme is for gifts of money by individuals who pay UK tax. Gift Aid donations are regarded as having basic rate tax deducted by the donor. Charities or CASCs take your donation - which is money you've already paid tax on - and reclaim the basic rate tax from HMRC. on its 'gross' equivalent - the amount before basic rate tax was deducted.
Basic rate tax is 20 per cent, so this means that if you give £10 using Gift Aid, it's worth £12.50 to the charity. For donations between 6 April 2008 and 5 April 2011 the charity or CASC will also get a separate government supplement of three pence on every pound you give.
